Leonardo da Vinci: Vortexes in the Human Heart

A look at Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches of the heart as part of his anatomical investigations. Here we are given an explanation of how he made a wax casting of the aorta and the sinuses of Valsalva at its base just above the aortic valve. He then made a glass model from the wax casting and experimented with injecting fluids into the sinuses of Valsalva. His insights have only recently been verified by modern medicine: that the movement of blood in this area of the heart creates vortices which contribute to the functioning of the valves.
