White Buffalo Calf Woman Brings the First Pipe, as told by John Fire Lame Deer (1967)
Handout
John Fire Lame Deer was a Lakota Holy man, and perhaps a Heyoka. His story is found in the book
Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions written with Richard Erdoes in 1972. He died several years later on
the Rosebud Lakota Reservation in South Dakota. His son Archie carries on his spiritual work. This
version of the Buffalo Calf Woman’s bringing of the first sacred Pipe is from American Indian Myths
and Legends, 1980, by Erdoes and Alfonso Oritz.
