Are our joints truly aging… or responding? Is degeneration inevitable… or a process with roots we can trace, understand, and influence? What hormonal, metabolic, structural, and emotional imprints accumulate unseen, slowly shifting the landscape of a joint?

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions in general practice – affecting nearly one in ten adults – and it is rising dramatically in younger people. Even our canine companions are now facing an epidemic of OA. Traditionally dismissed as simply “wear and tear,” OA has long been positioned as a mechanical, age-related fate.

But is this really true? And has it always been so?

In this first session of a two-part series on osteoarthritis, we journeyed into the exquisite micro-ecology of the articular joint – an environment far more dynamic, hydrated, electrically charged and metabolically alive than the traditional narrative suggests.

Together we explore:

  • The anatomy and physiology of articular joints. The living architecture of cartilage, synovium, meniscus, and subchondral bone and the dynamic forces that maintain articulation and fluid movement.
  • The importance of the proteome and structured water in cartilage. How protein matrices and the fourth phase of water create charge separation, lubrication, and load-distribution.
  • Bone and mineral homeostasis. The crystalline intelligence of bone, the dance of deposition and resorption and the subtle relationships between soft tissue calcification and systemic mineral regulation.
  • The pathological state and clinical presentation of OA. Reframing OA as a metabolic–inflammatory process rather than simple mechanical degradation.
  • The anabolic and catabolic processes driving degeneration. How cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases, oxidative stress, hormones and load transform cartilage from a regenerative to a degenerative state.
  • A map of the drivers of joint degeneration. Hormonal, metabolic, structural, inflammatory, fascial and emotional contributors.
