In course XI we begin by taking the heart in from various angles: the basic structure and function; ‘the-heart-as-a-pump’ model; the sensitive inner surface of the vessels – the glycocalyx; the vast flood plains of the microcirculation; ending off to consider the heart as our energetic centre. The bulk of the lessons are dedicated to understanding the various disease manifestations in this central, yet far-reaching system in our body. This includes diseases of the vasculature such as atheroma, which gives us an opportunity to unpack the controversy behind lipids and cholesterol, as well as the importance of mitochondria in heart health. We also explore the clinical presentations of cardio and cerebrovascular disease, from angina and heart attacks to arrhythmias, heart failure, strokes, thrombosis, and chronic oedema. We end by looking at key nutrients and the clotting cascade, as well as the impact of insulin resistance on cardiovascular disease. With this broad understanding of the key contributing factors, we are better equipped to find solutions to mend our broken hearts.
